Alpine Home Details
Alpine is one of the few Utah cities that has actively preserved its rural character — large lots, horse properties, and custom homes set back from the road. Many of these homes have cedar shake or wood board-and-batten siding that requires oil-based primer before any latex topcoat. The Dry Creek area in particular has older homes with multiple layers of paint that we often need to scrape and sand before we can get a clean substrate.
Climate & Paint Selection
Alpine's higher elevation and proximity to the Wasatch Front means it catches more wind than the valley floor — and wind-driven dust and debris is hard on paint films. We use a higher-sheen finish on north-facing walls where moisture tends to linger, and a UV-resistant formula on south and west exposures. The extra prep time we put in here is what makes the difference between a paint job that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 12.

Local Guide
Painting Alpine Homes: Cedar Shake, Custom Builds, and Getting It Right
Alpine is unlike most Utah County cities. The large lots, custom architecture, and preserved rural character mean you're more likely to find cedar shake siding, board-and-batten, and natural wood trim here than anywhere else in the valley. Those materials are beautiful — and they require a painter who knows how to handle them. Here's what goes into a quality paint job on an Alpine home.
Cedar Shake and Wood Siding: The Right Primer Matters
Cedar shake and rough-sawn wood siding are common in Alpine's older custom homes, and they're among the most demanding surfaces to paint correctly. Raw cedar contains tannins — natural oils that bleed through water-based primers and cause brown staining on the topcoat. The fix is an oil-based or shellac-based primer that seals the tannins before the latex topcoat goes on. Skip this step and you'll see brown bleed-through within a year, especially on the end grain of shakes. We always use an oil-based primer on cedar and redwood, full stop. It adds cost and dry time, but it's the only way to get a clean, lasting result.
Multiple Paint Layers: When to Strip, When to Paint Over
The older homes in Dry Creek and North Alpine often have 4-6 layers of paint built up over decades. At some point, the accumulated film gets thick enough that it starts to crack and peel under its own weight — no amount of prep will fix that without removing the old paint first. We assess the existing film thickness and adhesion on every Alpine job before quoting. If the paint is sound and well-bonded, we can clean, prime, and topcoat over it. If it's failing or too thick, we'll recommend stripping — either by scraping, heat gun, or chemical stripper depending on the surface. It's more work upfront, but it's the only way to get a 10-year result.
Horse Properties and Outbuildings
A lot of Alpine properties include barns, sheds, fences, and other outbuildings that need paint as much as the main house. We handle those too. Barn red is a classic for a reason — iron oxide pigments are among the most UV-stable available — but we can match any color you want. For board-and-batten outbuildings, we pay special attention to the battens (the vertical strips that cover the joints), because water runs down them and pools at the bottom if the caulk fails. We caulk every batten bottom and prime the end grain before topcoating.
Interior Painting in Alpine: Natural Light and Color Selection
Alpine homes tend to have large windows and open floor plans designed to take advantage of the mountain views. That natural light is a gift for interior color selection — colors that look flat in a showroom come alive in a room with good north light. But it also means colors shift dramatically between morning and afternoon as the light angle changes. We always recommend viewing paint samples at multiple times of day in the actual room before committing. For rooms with mountain views, we often suggest cooler neutrals that complement the landscape rather than compete with it.
Scheduling Around Alpine's Weather
Alpine's elevation means the painting season is slightly shorter than the valley floor. We typically won't apply exterior paint when temperatures are below 50 degrees or above 90 degrees, and Alpine's spring and fall mornings can drop below that threshold even when afternoons are warm. We monitor the forecast closely and schedule start times accordingly — sometimes that means a 10am start instead of 7am to let the morning chill burn off. We'd rather delay a start than apply paint in conditions that will cause it to fail.
